Pensée 48

Reflecting upon the recent election in the United States of America, my experience at the ground level of the American political system, as well as the various discussions had in a Social & Political Philosophy class, I've come to this:

I would argue that in political discourse, the impact and influence of Religion should only be so much that the objective sense of ethics prevails in action and office. Ideally one would divorce specific religious beliefs from ethics in politics and political decisions.

Freedom and Liberty

The terms Freedom and Liberty are used interchangeably in the modern era. I, however beg to differ. Though both terms have uncannily similar definitions and are used to describe each other, I am of the firm belief that there is a separate nuance and connotation, and should not necessarily be used interchangeably.

Liberty, is as I see it, what most people think of as freedom, on a personal, more naturalistic level. That man can move about freely and has reign over his actions. That he can think what he likes, move around how he chooses and practically do what he wants.

Freedom, I define as the "freedoms" provided by the State, such as the freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, Freedom of religion, Et Cetera. Because these freedoms are granted by a higher authority, you are by default not entirely "free". In order to benefit from these freedoms, one must also obey the laws established by the government. Breaking those laws will results in a plethora of punitive actions including Fines, Incarceration and in the worst of scenarios, Death. However, punitive action should not exempt one entirely from certain base freedoms (of which are described in the U.S. Constitution and else where).

Objectivity and Neutrality

I find that having been periodically questioned about Switzerland's neutrality, a concise definition is necessary. The topic of neutrality had also in many instances given rise to the topic of objectivity.

Neutrality is, as I see it and use the term, not complete withdrawal from current affairs or happenings. It is declining to state an opinion or choosing a side. This however is no excuse for not having an opinion nor staying well informed.

Objectivity, on the other hand, is presenting both sides of a debate or situation equally without bias towards one or the other. This also does not mean one shouldn't have an opinion. However if one wishes to present anything with objectivity, one must regard and present all arguments for or against etc. without stating one's personal inclination.

Freedom versus Order

In the worlds of political and social sciences, there exists the Individual Freedoms versus Social Order debate. It is generally most heated when legislation is passed that affects the personal freedoms of the individual. Most recently this confrontation has been brought to attention by the Shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

Freedom of the Individual is exactly that, how much can any one person do legally. The furthest extreme of "Freedom" is not Utopia as some might imagine, but instead utter anarchy. Anarchy is to be understood as lawlessness in this context. It only can be lawlessness. Without any laws or morals (which serve as laws for most religions) men are left to their own wills and desires. English author and political scientist Thomas Hobbes defines this clearly as "Bellum omnium contra omnes" or war of all against all. This is what lawlessness must inevitably come to because the wills and desires of individuals will clash with each other and there will be no effective or reasonable way to resolve any conflicts that arise aside from violence.

Social Order on the other hand is not only legislation in and of itself but how legislation is enforced. The furthest extreme of Order is complete Totalitarianism. Totalitarianism is to be understood as political system in which the "Establishment" or state knows no limits to its authority and power, and attempts to regulate and control all aspects of public and private life. Complete Totalitarianism would also attempt to control all thought. It is as far as I know impossible to entirely regulate and control original thought. There are of course various modes and forms of brainwashing, torture and "persuasion". Indeed many people prefer to have others think for them and tell them what to do. However there is always the capability to think for oneself, one need only do so.  The logical furthest extreme of Order is any functional form of totalitarianism, an example of which is best found in V for Vendetta (Graphic novel [1982-1989] Film {2006}). Totalitarianism is also indubitably dystopian.

Having seen that neither alone are any good, one is left to wonder how to balance these two opposing forces optimally. Having lived in Europe, specifically in Switzerland, a country where an emphasis on Social Order is part of society, I tend to lean towards a balance favoring Order but enough Freedom that Order is not overbearing. Europe as a whole however, is subject to different influences than the United States or the rest of the world. In Europe at any given time if one nation were to let its guard down one of your many neighbors would attempt to invade or begin some sort of military action. A few examples of Social Order in Switzerland include: 1) Mandatory militia army service for all male citizens.[All male citizens are conscripted when they reach majority and are found to be:"satisfying physically, intellectually and mentally requirements for military service or civil protection service and being capable of accomplishing these services without harming oneself or others" Military service is then after 18-21 weeks of Basic Training, 3 weeks every year until age 30, provided one does not pursue a higher rank.{Soldiers are required to take their weapons home with them during their service}] 2) Registration of denizens of any village.[At birth one is registered at the local town hall. If one wants to move to a different city or village, one must first unregister from ones own town, and apply to live in the next town, wherein the next town votes on whether or not the citizens of the town will allow you to move there. Then once granted such permission one is registered as living in the new town. 3) Strict border control.[The Swiss borders are strictly controlled, and even if one is smuggled into the country it is exceedingly difficult to get a job, rent an apartment or otherwise live without the proper documentation.] Certain aspects of Social Order though, are often difficult to enforce in Large countries without resorting to Authoritarianism or worse.

Freedom then is the other part of the balance. The United States of America has since the middle of the 19th Century never dealt with an international threat in its own territory and thus is the mindset towards Freedom and Order very different. There are also a number of social, cultural and other historical factors that play into this. As an American however, I am very much in favor of the Bill of Rights which ensure certain basic freedoms to the citizens. Specifically:
-The Right to Religious Freedom (to worship however and whoever you choose without government persecution),
-The Freedom of Speech (the Government cannot arrest you because of what you say, no matter how critical or against the current government it might be, though this freedom is not absolute as Obscenity, Defamation, Incitement, Incitement to Riot, and Speech Integral to Criminal Conduct are considered offenses)
-The Freedom of the Press (insures that the Government does not censor the Media or interfere otherwise)
-The Freedom of Assembly (People may congregate in public without Government interference or private so long as other laws aren't being broken in the process)
-The Right to Petition (to make complaint to or seek the assistance of the Government without fear of punishment)
-The Right to keep and bear Arms (every citizen has the right to a firearm for self defense. This amendment has been highly debated and further specifically defined and interpreted, however for the purpose of this Pensée I mean to utilize its intent and not specific definition.)
-The following rights and freedoms have to specifically do with one's first contact with Law enforcement to one's last interaction with them [From arrest to conviction by trial and sentencing] {Amendments IV through VIII}
They include protection from unreasonable search and seizure, due process, self-incrimination, rights of the accused, right to counsel, right to a public trial, right to trial by jury, right to speedy trial, prohibitions of excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment.
Further is the protection of rights not specifically laid out in the Constitution of the United States of America as well as protection of the powers of the individual States and People from the Federal Government.

I find it difficult to decide where to draw the line. How much of one over the other. These two are after all diametrically opposed, and yet both are necessary.

Pensée 43

It is not only necessary to clearly define each term precisely, but understand, be aware and wary of the varying cultural contexts of terms. For example, the term "hate" in the English language is used to convey mild to strong dislike for something, someone or a situation. The same word in German is "Hass" and literally expresses the emotion of hate, the pure, raw, unfiltered, unadulterated feeling of hate. "Hate- to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward."

Pensée 42

I find it invaluable to lay down specific and finite definitions for the terms used in any discussion or explanation. There are within the English language alone a plethora of definitions for any single one term. To state exactly what one means to say, to convey the precise meaning of a thought represented by a word, avoids all manner of confusion and misunderstanding and makes for ease of conversation and use.

Pensée 41

Upon the topic of personalities and character traits. We have come to the conclusion that a certain state of "Tabula rasa" exists. That we are essentially blank slates. we are not only influenced by nurture but by society as we age and mature. We are in essence the embodiment of every characteristic and personality trait. these are then expressed or suppressed, either consciously or unconsciously. By unconscious suppression it is to be understood that this phenomenon is not actively controlled by the person, instead by exposure to long term or short term factors that cause a fundamental change in behavior. An example of a short term outside influence is fear. Fear breeds savagery in even the most upright and "civilized".
Fear brings us in an instant back to the most basic of thought processes and with it of reactions. Fear, whether real or perceived will cause one and all to revert to our core instincts, to save one's self , regardless of how that might affect one's community. Historical examples include any and all informants to a corrupt government or anyone who sells someone else out for their own safety. Fear of the unknown and or new and different things as well as perceived threats are also factors as shown in the Witch-Hunts of centuries past as well as the Anti-Communist hunts and propaganda in the United States during the 1950's.
An example of a prolonged exposure tendency is found most simply in one's social surroundings if one spends prolonged periods of time in the company of those more inclined to frequently use expletives in their speech, one will find one's self using more expletives more often. Alternatively if one keeps company with those less inclined towards profanity one too will also adapt to their mode of speech.
All of one's characteristics could be then consciously altered by ones recognition of the specific characteristic or tendency and the sheer will power and determination to alter it.

Pensée 39

What we choose to listen to as well as watch, I find is an interesting expression of our personalities and character. First, each is to be analyzed, what about the certain style of music or genre of TV show or movie compels us to it, and why we associate with it. Each genre of both audio and video then is a specific expression of a certain character trait, either expressed or suppressed. Therefore, the collection of both Audio and Visual Media one identifies with, can say a lot about that person depending on in what way that person associates with each. As we grow and change, so too do our tastes, however I am not entirely certain that our characters or personalities change, only that certain traits become expressed or suppressed. This then would be my explanation for why a man in his youth might enjoy one type of media, though identify with it less and less as he progresses through adulthood or even find it wholly distasteful. One might also take into account the ebb and flow of one's spiritual convictions as these too have an influence on one's tastes and how one comports one's self.

Pensée: 38

The concept of public opinion intrigues me. Cicero accurately stated that: "Nothing is more obscure than public opinion..." Like minded individuals tend to band together into political parties or other similar organizations. Such organizations are indeed open to the public, however are not "the public" but are private organizations. There are always  multiple opinions to every issue, action or legislation. How then can there be a "public opinion" because the public seems to have multiple, more often than not, conflicting opinions. As humans we tend to make our minds up about things very quickly, or abstain entirely from having an opinion. The public is so diverse, I cannot see there being a single, consolidated opinion of the public. There are public opinions, that the differing factions of the public stand behind and debate. Next, I find that our society, the author included, has limited attention span, which contributes to our ever differing opinions. This limited span of attention allows us to be easily influenced and our opinions easily swayed ans manipulated because we find it easier, simpler and faster to believe what we are told instead of forming a personal consolidated opinion and sticking to it, allowing of course for reasonable and polite discourse and debate, knowing that there is always a differing opinion then one's own.

Before a man proposes to a woman, there are a few things he must first take into consideration. First, Do I know where I am going long term career wise, if not do I have an established plan or general direction. Next, am I able to support my wife, regardless if she is seeking employment or not. Furthermore, am I absolutely positively sure that I want to spent the rest of my life with this person. For better or for worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, until we are separated by death. "A man must know where he is going before he can ask anyone to come along"

The Question of the Diplomats Wife
It is to be understood, that because of the Author's inclination towards a career in diplomacy and will more likely than not find himself in a life style that will carry him far from his native soil, and that for extended periods of time. This is why the Author has and must always preoccupy himself with this thought.

"Firstly, is the person you are interested in or in a serious relationship with willing to leave family and friends to travel around the world with you as you work and live there.
Next, is your hypothetical spouse trained or educated in such a way that he or she could find employment at a local institution or company without too much accommodation, if he or she so desires."

Diplomats lead a life of constant change which includes never living in one place for too long, the current fare is around 4 years per posting. There are many other professions and vocations that require a fair bit of travel and living abroad, I found diplomats to be the most apt example.

Of telling and writing of stories
"On Characters"

There are, as I see it, only a finite number of characters in any work of fiction, and even perhaps in real life. To begin, there are only a specific, finite amount of character/personality traits. (e.g. Honesty, Loyalty, Deceitfulness, Malevolence, Dependability, Wile etc.) Characters are then defined by these traits. Protagonists are more often than not the embodiment of the better part of all the positive traits. Antagonists then embody all the negative of these traits, at least nominally, as the embodiment of any of these is merely how the author of the story portrays the character and how the reader perceives the character and his or her actions. As there are only a finite number of traits there can only be a finite amount of combinations of these traits. Characters are no more than collections of accentuated and expressed traits. Because of the finite number of combination, there can only be a finite number of characters. These characters may indeed have their own personal quirks, beliefs and convictions, but are technically the same as the other characters that share the specific combination of traits.

"The more I see the less I know"*

I find that as my education progresses and I continue to learn and expand my wealth of knowledge, I find that, that which I know  becomes more and more insignificant as I find troves and deep wells of knowledge and information which I do not know. My "wealth of knowledge " becomes superficial in comparison to all that I see and do not know and do not understand. As time progresses, I learn more and comprehend more, and as I do so, I discover yet more that I do not know and my superficial knowledge is rendered minute and insignificant. This would support both specialization and generalization of one's self for by this phenomenon, it is, or is seemingly, impossible to know everything.

A Psalm of Thanksgiving

24th of November 2011

Oh Sovereign Lord, I called to you by night. I was naught but mere bones wandering through the barren waste. I called to you by day as the sun beat down upon me and scorched my skin. My tongue was like worn leather upon my lips. I longed for your presence Lord. Oh Sovereign Lord amidst my doubts and fears, my sorrows and pains, you came down to me. A droplet of Living water would have sufficed me but you fill my cup to the brim. The enemy was at the gates. Those that wished to injure me were before me. Defenseless and unarmed they surrounded me. I cried to you, oh Sovereign Lord! You heard my cry and came to my aid. Your righteous right hand vanquished my foes. Your holy left hand healed my sores and burns. Your all consuming fire has redeemed my soul. Truly you Lord deserve all honor, praise and thanksgiving! The sound of your glorious name moves mountains into the seas. You are the king of kings and the redeemer of my soul. You are my savior. I was nothing a wretched soul in the meaningless wasteland. By your great good grace you lifted me up, dusted me off and threw me in the the refining fire where I now stand. You have blessed me with fellowship among the flames. Blessed me with brothers and sisters in you. Together we praise you, in good times and in bad for, according to your promise to work all things to our ultimate good for your glory. You provide for me always, though I may not see it at all times you are always faithful. Truly the Sovereign Lord blesses and keeps his people. Praise be to Him the Lord of all creation and giver of all blessings. Amen.

A Psalm of Lament

17th October 2011

Oh Sovereign Lord, my God, why have you forsaken me? I was once in green fields, beneath tall trees resting in their cool shade. Indeed I was once pastured beside deep pools of life giving water. Why oh Lord have you forsaken me? I roam listlessly through the barren desert. I am reduced to mere bones as I wander the meaningless wasteland. Have I not served you oh Sovereign Lord? Have I not executed your commands to the letter? I am but a deaf man in a lone room. Though I cry out to you oh sovereign Lord, you do not answer me. Indeed Lord I call out by day and by night and still you are silent Lord. when the armies of the enemy surround me, I cry out for you Lord. Yet thou are my vision lord, my best thought by day and by night. Awake or asleep thy presence is my light. As I walk through utter darkness thy light is a lamp to my feet. I know that you will deliver me from my enemies. All that wish to injure me will be vanquished by thy right hand like jars of clay dashed by an iron rod. Oh high king of heaven, my victory won, may I reach heaven, oh bright heavens sun. Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision oh ruler of all.

The Jack of All Trades Theory
Nominally it is called generalism, though this name does the meaning no justice. I find it appropriate and wise to have experience in many things, though master of a few. This is the cause for the author's interest in everything and anything. Being a jack of all trades has many advantages first and fore most, it grants one the ability to aid more communities and individuals than one would be able to as a “specialist”. Next it benefits the individual “jack”. It increases his attractiveness to be hired, increases the amount of different jobs one could apply for as well as flushes out his resumé. Furthermore it is always to his benefit to be able to have a wise and educated word in all topics of conversation.

As to the loyalty of rebels to their cause, not a single rebel should chastise or accuse an other of disloyalty to the cause. Each Man and Woman has his or her own responsibilities pertaining to his or her own life, work or family. Therefore, should he or she be threatened with arrest, it is to be wholly understood if many would lay down the cause. This is not disloyalty, it is responsibility. [The Author has the "Occupy" movement in mind.]

Pensée: 31

Rebellion, is a most interesting phenomenon. It causes nominally rational people to do irrational things. The rebellion of youth against authority is a prime example of this, however some might argue that youth is not rational. Rebellion against rebellion it's self, though perceived merely as loyalty to authority or a lack of courage to rebel, is also a form of rebellion. It is a rebellion, in which one disagrees more strongly with the rebel movement than the authority against which there is rebellion, Disagreement with the powers that be, though may wholly be evident with the "loyalist's" sentiments.

Perception strangely passes for absolute truth. Most seem to care not for the facts behind an event or circumstance but bother themselves with it only long enough to have an opinion. This opinion is then viewed by one's specific predisposition and or prejudices. Very rarely do we take the time to investigate, pursue and confirm all the details. In this way are innocent actions construed and transformed into Felonies and the most vile of deeds seen as naught but innocence.

The 4th Estate of Power (the media) has an interesting position in the United States compared to other governments I have observed. Though via the Media, the Government is kept in check, to an extent at least. It seems that the Media also elevates politicians to the level of celebrities, which skews the political system entirely when the time to elect a president arrives. The populous, at least a percentage of them, then votes for one or the other candidate out of purely unpolitical reason. (e.g. It's popular to vote for the one or the other, or one finds Candidate "A" to be more attractive than Candidate "B" and therefore votes for Candidate "A".

I've come to find that no matter how much you simplify events, thought processes and Circumstances, it will be impossible, or close to it, to fully understand who, what, how and why I am what I am. I however, don't begin to assume, that even I, who is privy to all, or at least most of the above mentioned information, knows entirely who, what, how ans why I am what I am.

Pensée: 26

It would seem to me that many an old  and mature believer in our christian Faith should write a statement of faith so that they, who already are firm in faith may precisely state their concrete convictions in this matter of Faith. The benefits of such a statement are numerous. One of which, to have a firm basis of argument should it come to a discussion of belief or to infighting and argument among fellow christians. This however is by no means standard, only a suggestion.

Pensée: 25

Much of life seems to be to be a touch-and-go game of knowing when to formulate and implement plans and when to let it all go and let the Lord implement his divine Plan. For it is wholly impractical to have no plans at all for the future, this can lead to a complete dissociation from life and society which is decidedly unhealthy. On the other hand, having and making too many plans of one's own creation creates a state of rushing from one event to the next where by the hustle and chaos that thus ensues. In this state, the Lord's calling and plans become, in the most extreme case, drowned out entirely. Therefore the Author recommends not only playing this game of touch-and-go but presenting all things to the Lord and in all decision making and planning one's Moral rules be adhered to.

Time: Taking time for one anothers needs and to be there for the other. Without Trust, every relationship will falter and ultimately disintegrate. Like wise without communication, any relationship will fail. Bad communication leads to misunderstandings. Misunderstandings lead to foolish actions which cause permanent damage to a relationship. This damage ironically can be repaired through communication. Without Common Interest be it in the relationship or other subjects, then the relationship will be strained. Without Mutual Respect of any sort, lines wont me defined. Without lines and boundries, things will be said and done which result in extensive permanent  damage in the relationship. Preamble

October 2011

About a year or so ago, I was required to read the best part of Blaise Pascal's Pensées. I really enjoyed them, especially "the Wager". In anycase, I was greatly inspired by Pascal's work, so much so that I shortly thereafter decided to begin my own work of "Thoughts*". These thoughts are meant to be shared discussed and mulled over, some might serve as a social commentary of our day and age, others might entirely be ageless wisdoms, regurtitated and recycled and some how found their way into my pen and on to the paper. Since the 19th of Febuary 2011, I have penned 32 of these "pensées", with the hope of many more yet to come.

*Pensées is French for Thoughts, Pascal himself being a Frenchman. As a Citizen of a country who has French as one of it's national languages, I found it fitting to do so, though "Gedanken" or "Thoughts" would have been appropriate as well.
