A gentleman keeps his promises to the best of his ability. If he does not, then his word is of little to no value. As his words loses value so then do his actions. Without these he is not worthy of trust which then diminishes his reputation. This is what distinguishes the "chivalrous" or gentlemen from the "Plebian" rest. A man is as only good as his word.
